When Hŏ Pong was young, he was frivolous and rash. After just one dismissal, he could not pull himself together. Could he have been Liu Zongyuan’s type? But his poetry was exceptional (chŏlga). He understood ancient techniques (pŏp) and his style (kyŏk) was superior to his bother Hŏ Kyun’s. Some say Hŏ Nansŏrhŏn’s poems were written by Hŏ Kyun who falsely attributed them to her. But the style of her poetry was even superior to Hŏ Pong’s, something that Hŏ Kyun could not reach. When I was at the Office of Special Advisors (Hongmun’gwan), I saw a Chinese book titled Gen shi chao 亘史鈔 (Extensive Historical Excerpts). Its last section included Nansŏrhŏn chip (Collected Works of Hŏ Nansŏrhŏn) in its entirety and even compared her poems to Li Bai’s. In the preface to her works, it even said, “She could have been given the brush to write history like Great Master Ban Zhao 班昭 (45–116), but Chosŏn constrained her to ensure her writing does not exceed leisurely activity.” This is an absurd remark.
