Entry Text
In official prose and parallel prose, Yi Sik was skillful in every way. In poetry, his style (kyŏk) was not very superior, yet his poems in every form were wonderful (myo). Evaluating himself Yi often said, “My writing is like an assassin on a mission who murders the target with a dagger.” Perhaps he was describing how he strikes points of subtle and wondrous (yomyo) with simple words but refined (chŏng) meanings (ŭi). His striking (kyŏng) couplet, At the green mountain, I settle for awhile, Not because I have forgotten about the world.White hair grows daily in number, Not because I have worries about home. is refined (chŏng) to the utmost, making people recite it untiringly.
