Kwŏn P’il and Yi Annul were equally famous for their writings, and it is difficult to judge their relative superiority and inferiority. In seven-character regulated verses Kwŏn certainly fell short of Yi by far. But, at the same time, Yi could not match Kwŏn in five-character regulated verses and five-character ancient Style verses, seven-character quatrains and seven-character ancient style verses. Evaluating himself Yi often said, “If compared to the talented people during the Three Kingdoms’ period, I would be Sima Qian.” He was perhaps describing that poets have an orthodox tradition to return to. But in a poem presented to Kwŏn, Yi wrote, My friend, a master from Yŏngga, is Marquis Zhuge of today. Thus, he let Kwŏn take the place of Zhuge Liang. Kwŏn’s poems such as “Ch’ungju Rock” 忠州石, “How blue is the sky” 天何蒼蒼, and “Not seeing you” 君不見, other seven-character ancient style poems, all of “Thoughts of the Ancients” 古意, the unique and ingenious (kimyo) works among his five-character ancient style poems and five-character regulated verses were works that Yi could not match. Yet among Yi’s seven-character regulated verses, such as “In the sixth month in Yongman, a long rain has cleared” 六月龍灣積雨晴, “In the deep spring, the public willows are greener than the moss” 春深官柳綠勝苔, “A day for a watchful soul is equal to ten springs” 一日兢魂抵十春,” and other over a hundred poems, were not only unattainable to Kwŏn, but also surpassed the entire generation, thereby reaching the pinnacle of accomplishments. His five-character regulated verse, “Thousands of li away is the Kingdom of Ryūkyū 萬里琉球國,” is the most unique (ki) poem of all.
