Although Chief State Councilor (yŏngŭijŏng) Chŏng T’aehwa 鄭太和 (1602–1673) was not confident about his prose and poetry, at times he wrote fine (ho) poems. Once he had an affair with a kisaeng in P’yŏngyang, and later when he became governor (kwanch’alsa), he abandoned her. He wrote a poem on a fan and gave it to her. 緣隨春夜短情與酒杯深 Our destiny was brief like a spring night, and our love deep as a wine cup. He also wrote “Presented to the Governor of Kangwŏn Province” 贈關東伯, 為謝新東伯來尋病判樞多情求別語得意向名區海闊經層浪山高歷畏途城西門獨掩安靜不如吾 I thank you, the new Governor of Kangwŏn,for coming to visit this bed-ridden Chief Privy Councilor.Full of emotion, I search for words of farewell, feeling glad that you are heading to a renowned region. The ocean is wide. You will face towering waves. The mountains are tall. You will travel through dangerous roads. If you want to be alone, close the west gate. But it won’t be as quiet as mine. It has the bearing of a high official.
