Among many scholars in Chŏlla province, someone wrote in a poem titled “Dwelling in Leisure” 閑居, 黃牛飽龁無余念白鷺閑眠有底愁 Yellow oxen eat their fills without other thoughts.White herons sleep idly with freedom from worries. The expression (ŏ) is clear and simple (ch’ŏngdam), and it is a pity that the author’s name was lost. There is also Im Wŏn 林垣 (17th century), a grandson of Im Che, who wrote in a eulogy to a friend, The recluse who likes to make merryhas left Gu Mountain. On the bridge over the snow-covered stream, a crane casts a cold shadow. A poet’s spirit I beckon to no avail. Before spring, you shall return together with early plum blooms.A couplet in his poem “New Year’s Eve” 除夜 燈亦妒人挑歲盡雞誰教汝唱春先 The lamp also envies humans and rushes the year to its end.Rooster! Who told you to sing before spring comes? is really consummate (kung) and artful (kyo).
