國初。朴貞齋。李雙梅之詩。最高。權陽村。卞春亭詩。不如文。徐四佳之大手。可謂我朝之燕許。而不詣妙境。當時。李三灘。姜晋山。一體各有長於四佳。而其大皆不如。惟佔畢獨超出。而四佳終不讓文衡。難免於忮矣
At the beginning of our dynasty, poems by Pak Ŭijung 朴宜中 (1337–1403; sobriquet Chŏngjae [Steadfast Studio]), and Yi Ch’ŏm were most admired (ch’oego). Kwŏn Kŭn’s and Pyŏn Kyeryang’s poetry was not as good as their prose. With his great talent (taesu), Sŏ Kŏjŏng can be considered Dukes of Yan and Xu of our dynasty, but in the end, he did not attain the level of wonder (myogyŏng). At the time, Yi Sŭngso and Kang Hŭimaeng exceeded Sŏ Kŏjŏng, each in his particular style (ch’e), but their other works were not as good as Sŏ’s. Only Kim Chongjik stood above them all, but Sŏ did not yield the position of Director of the Office of Royal Decrees (taejehak) to Kim even until the end. Jealousy is difficult to avoid.
