Among the Ming envoys to our dynasty, none surpassed Gong Yongqing in poetic accomplishments. At the time of Gong’s visit (1537), Yi Haeng was Welcoming Official (wŏnjŏpsa), Chŏng Saryong, So Seyang, Yi Hŭibo were Diplomatic Administrative Attendants (chongsagwan), all of whom were accomplished poets. At the time of Gu Tianjun’s visit in the imin year (1612), Yi Chŏnggwi served as Welcoming Official, Yi Annul, Pak Tongyŏl 朴東說 (1564–1622; sobriquet Namgwak [South Ctiy Wall]) and Hong Sŏbong as Diplomatic Attendants, Kwŏn P’il as a Diplomatic Administrative Attendant without a rank (paegŭi chongsagwan), Ch’a Ch’ŏllo and Yang Kyŏngu as Composers of Documents (chesulgwan), and Kim Hyŏnsŏng and Han Ho as calligraphers. Concerning excellence in each art form, this entourage was even better. Yi Homin and Yu Kŭn were Reception Officials (yŏngwisa), and Ch’oe Rip happened to be in P’yŏngyang at the time, so contemporaries said, “Literary stars have all gathered in the Kwansŏ region.” At first, when Yi Chŏnggwi recommended Kwŏn P’il before the king, requesting a permission to bring him along, King Sŏnjong wished to hear a poem by Kwŏn. In response, Kwŏn immediately recited a quatrain “Dreaming of Ku Yong” 夢具容, which said, 幽明相接杳無因一夢殷勤未是眞掩淚出山尋去路曉鶯啼送獨歸人 The worlds of the living and the dead are too far apart for us to meet.I dreamed a dream of deep affection, but it was not real.Covered in tears, I leave the hills, looking for a way back.Morning orioles cry to see off the only person returning. The king praised the poem greatly and ordered Kwŏn to present the poem in writing. The lines in Ch’oe Rip’s poem “Presented to Sŏkchu” 贈石洲, 聞說至尊征稿入全勝身到鳳凰池 I heard the king requested your poem in writing. This by far is better than visiting the phoenixes’ pool! Refers to this event. King Sŏnjong loved him but without addressing Kwŏn by his name said, “Sŏkchu and Ku, how deep their friendship must have been to create poetic expression (siŏ) of such sadness!” The honor received at that time by Kwŏn, an unemployed scholar, is not less than the day when Li Bai became Retinue Official (gongfengguan).
