By studying Shao Yong’s Neo-Confucian learning, Song Ikp’il grasped the charm (p’ungun) of High Tang poetry that was truly unequaled. For example, his phrases such as, 日午千花靜池淸萬象形 At noon, a thousand flowers are silent.A pond so clear reflects ten thousand forms. When the flowers are ready to bloom, only then are there colors.Where the waters form a deep pool, only there is no sound. are indeed extraordinary (ki). Critics say “Chŏng Saryong, No Susin, Hwang Chŏnguk are the three talents of the court. Kim Sisŭp, Nam Hyoon and Song Ikp’il are the three talents of the mountains and forests.”
