In the winter of the ŭlmyo year (1675), when I was at the Office of the Kija Shrine (Sunginjŏn), I composed the following lines in a dream, 滄州空闊萬帆過一水春添雨後波 In the boundless waterland, ten thousand sails pass. A river in spring swells with waves after a rain. Before I could finish writing the next line, I woke up. In the dream, I saw a river pavilion in an extremely beautiful scenery, but I did not know where it was and also where I got my poetic concept (siŭi). Yi Tanha 李端夏 (1625–1790; styled Kyeju), who at the time was in Chip’yŏng county, happened to send me a letter. In it he wrote: “In a dream, you and I were passing by a river pavilion, and I wrote the following lines, 黃鶴白雲何日去綠陰芳草此時多 Yellow cranes and white clouds, when will we visit them? There is much green shade and fragrant plants this time around. I did not know what they meant.” When reading his letter at first I did not remember, then reading it again I came to a sudden realization. His lines correspond in meaning with the lines I composed earlier in my dream, and the four lines can form a perfect quatrain. But in the quality of rhymes and poetic forms (kyŏngnyul) and in the description of the season and scenery, our two couplets seem to match harmoniously. In comparison, the story of Yuan Zhen and Bai Juyi’s dream at Baocheng county and the Qu River seems less strange. But I do not know if I can find out later when and where was the place I experienced in dream.
