月課有桃源之題。余有一聯曰。深深洞府依然是。處處桃花記取難。柳公道三亦偶同此韻曰。非關洞壑經心少。自是神仙入手難。兩句皆批點入優等。余愛柳句以為勝余。李相錫爾。以余句氣象。勝於柳云。然柳之工妙。終勝余

English Translation

At a monthly examination, to the topic “Peach Blossom Spring” 桃源 I wrote the following couplet, 深深洞府依然是處處桃花記取難 Deeply hidden grotto realm still remains the same.Everywhere is peach blossom hard to put them in words. Yu Tosam also composed a poem using the same rhymes, and he wrote, 非關洞壑經心少自是神仙入手難 It’s not that in the grotto I wasn’t mindful enough.Rather the world of immortalsis difficult for me to reach. Both poems received good grades. I loved Yu’s poem and thought it was better than mine. Minister Yi Kyŏngŏk however said the scenery (kisang) in my poem is better than Yu’s. But Yu’s skills (kong) are ingenious (myo) so in the end he surpasses me.
