(1614–1671; styled Chaei) did not study poetry, at times he wrote good poems. Once he and I composed several poems to the rhymes “peach” 桃 and “laborious” 勞, and a couplet by him reads, 吸三斗醋竟安用緣百尺竿無乃勞 Drink up three cups of vinegar. In the end what is the use?Climb up a hundred-foot bamboo pole. Wouldn’t that be laborious? It is upright just like his person. Sŏ was also good at playful works. When Cho Kwisŏk 趙龜錫 (1615–1665; styled Usŏ) was a Secret Censor (amhaeng ŏsa), he sent a poem to Sŏ. Sŏ playfully responded to the poem in matching rhymes and wrote, It turns out that a white-foreheaded tiger was unreal.Looking carefully, a black-furred bear was real. It was perhaps because Cho had a dark face and lots of beard.
