申季良最。詩學明而早成。與余同游槐院。宴于三清洞。醉。翌日寄詩曰。抱病尋常不啓扉。忽鷙春事雨中非。寧嫌沾濕花間過。却喜聯翩醉裡歸。詞客彩毫干氣象。佳人寶瑟怨芳菲。君看天地風塵色。趁日芳遊且莫違。老成可喜。不幸早世惜哉

English Translation

Sin Ch’oe was brilliant in the study of poetry and also became successful early. Once he and I visited the Office of Diplomatic Correspondence (Sŭngmunwŏn) and attended a banquet at Samch’ŏngdong and returned home drunk. The next day, he sent me a poem which said, 抱病尋常不啓扉忽驚春事雨中非寧嫌霑濕花間去却喜聯翩醉裡歸詞客彩毫干氣象佳人錦瑟怨芳菲君看天地風塵色趁日狂遊且莫違 Having been ill often, I did not open the gate.Suddenly, it’s spring and I loathe to be in the rain.Though I hate getting wet, I’d rather walk among the flowersand joyfully flutter about and return home drunk. A poet-guest with a gifted brush seeks beautiful sceneries.A fair lady plays on a brocade zither and reproaches the scent. Look at the world full of the colors of windblown dust! Seize the day and play madly for nothing stands in our way! Had Ch’oe aged and matured (nosŏng), it would have been delightful (kahŭi). But unfortunately he died young. How pitiful!
