李知白。梨川之庶孫也。詩才敏給。余少時。同栖山榻。李自稱善押強韻。余以網巾為題。呼蛩銎庸三字。則應聲曰。巧似蜘蛛織似蛩。細針嫌孔濶嫌銎。朝來歛盡千莖髮。烏帽紗巾作附庸。座中皆歎其工。世人多以為余作。非也

English Translation

Yi Chibaek, Yi Hongju’s 李弘冑 (1562–1638; sobriquet Ich’ŏn [Pear River]) illegitimate grandson, had a nimble (min’gŭp) poetic talent. When I was young, when we were lounging together on a long table in the mountain, Yi claimed that he was good at matching difficult rhymes. Using the “Headband” 網巾 as a topic, I chose three words “cricket” 蛩, “axe eye” 銎, and “merit” 庸. He then responded in voice, 巧似蜘蛛織似蛩細針嫌孔闊嫌銎朝來欽盡千莖發烏帽紗巾作附庸 A skillful work of a spider woven by a cricket.Densely sewn without a hole, sparsely without an axe eye.In the morning, when I’m done admiring a thousand roots of hair,under my black cap and gauze head scarfI use you as a fixture. Everyone who was present admired his skillfulness (kong). Many in the world think that the poem was my work, but that is not true.
