Original Text

In the past when I lived at family home in Yŏnsan, Ch’ungch’ŏng province, a boy servant of mine contracted a malaria. I playfully composed a four-rhyme regulated verse and stuck it to his back and he immediately recovered from the plague. The Earth Spirit entangles with his body coiled nine times. With his two towering horns, he supports the sky.Dragon’s oil bubbles up in a thousand-feet tall caldron. The halberds of Tiger Guards attack ten thousand armored spirits. Opening the mouth, he drinks up the Bohai Sea to silt.Wielding the fist, he smashes down Kunlun Mountain to dust.Pitiful is the Water Emperor whose children became cowardly demons!Riding on Star and Wind, he disappeared beyond Earth. Because the malaria demon is a water spirit, and also because Earth overcomes Water, I used the sayings from the Chuci about the Earth Spirit. Since then, when someone in the family contracted a plague, we beat it by sticking a piece of paper with the copied poem on his or her back and it always proved to be effective. Moreover, whoever was sick in the neighborhood also copied the poem and applied it to their bodies, and the whole village followed suit. People from Ŭnjin, Sŏksŏng, Puyŏ, Kongju, Chinam, and Kŭmsan copied the poem from each other. There is none that did not see the efficaciousness of that one piece of paper, even those who suffered many years from the plague. This truly is amusing.
