Once while having a casual conversation with Cho Sik, Yi Hwang said, “People like wine and sex, but while it is easy to refrain from wine, it is most difficult to refrain from sex. A line in Shao Yong’s poem, ‘Sex can create an avaricious desire in a person’ 色能使人嗜, also speaks of the difficulty of abstinence. How are you with sex?” Cho laughed and said, “When it comes to sex, I am a defeated general. Please don’t ask.” Yi said, “When I was young although I wished to desist, I was unable to. Now in middle age, it is still quite difficult to desist because I lack willpower.” At the time, Song Ikp’il was also present. He was a humble person but could write. Song said, “There is something that I once wrote. I hope I can receive corrections from you honorable sirs.” Then he recited the poem, Fine wine on a jade tray is gone without a shadow. But a little blush on snow-white cheeks quickly leaves its trace. With shadow or without a trace, all are for pleasure. When pleasure is done, be aware of abstinence. Just don’t leave any feelings. The meaning (yongŭi) was profound (simjŏl). Yi Hwang recited it and said it was good. Cho laughed and said, “This poem is perfect for a defeated general who lacks abstinence.”
