鄭北牕磏。九月念後。咏晩菊曰。十九卄九皆是九。九月九日無定時。多少世人皆不識。滿堦惟有菊花知。其弟碏和之曰。世人最重重陽節。未必重陽引興長。若對黃花傾白酒。九秋何日不重陽。時。有以磏碏此詩言。大提學柳根。取碏詩。而舍磏詩。以爲無律。吁磏識音律知人。曾謂不知根之知音乎。所以自古得知音。難矣
북창 정렴이 구월 스무날 이후에 늦게 핀 국화를 읊었다. "" 그의 동생 정작이 화답하여 말했다. "" 그때 정렴과 정작의 이 시를 가지고 대제학 유근에게 말하였더니 정작의 시를 취하고 정렴의 시를 버리면서 시율이 없다고 여겼다. 아! 정렴과 같이 음률을 잘 아는 사람이 어찌 유근이 음을 아는 것만 못하다고 하겠는가? 그러므로 예로부터 지음을 얻기가 어렵다 하는 것이다.
In his “A Poem on Late Chrysanthemums after Recalling the Ninth Month” 九月念後詠晚菊, Chŏng Ryŏm (sobriquet Pukch’ang [North-facing Window]) said, 十九廿九皆是九九月九日無定時多少世人皆不識滿階惟有菊花知 Nineteen and twenty-nine all have nine.The ninth day of the ninth month has no fixed day.Oh, how many people in the world do not realize this?Covering the stairs, only the chrysanthemums would know. His younger brother Chŏng Chak responded to the poem and said, 世人最重重陽節未必重陽引興長若對黃花傾白酒九秋何日不重陽 People treat with highest regardthe Double Ninth Festival.But it doesn’t have to be the Double Ninth to enjoy the elation.If you offer toward yellow flowers a toast of rice wine,what day of the ninety days of autumn will not be the Double Ninth Festival?At the time, discussing these poems by Chŏng Ryŏm and Chŏng Chak, Director of the Office of Royal Decrees (taejehak) Yu Kŭn accepted Chak’s poem but rejected Ryŏm’s poem, thinking the latter did not follow the poetic meter (yul). Oh! Ryŏm is a person who understands the sound and rules of poetry, so how could one say his understanding of sound is not as good as that Yu’s? This is why since the ancient time, finding someone who knows one’s tune is difficult.
