| 高敬命。字而順。在光州閑居時。徐益爲隣郡太守。有一僧與益相好。留其邑許多日。將向光州。干謁于敬命。益曰。吾當於某日。往省高君。寄聲丁寧。僧如光州。謁敬命。仍致益辭。敬命待之頗款。次卷中詩與之。仍曰。徐君受。近日作何詩。曰。作四韻詩四首矣。曰。爾記其韻乎。曰。能記之。盖以雲。濆等字爲韻矣。敬命之意以爲。君受若來。必以詩酒挑戰。揣其才。不能臨塲應卒。必預搆若干首。要以窘我。所謂四首。必其日酒場之需也。敬命亦用其韻。預搆六首而待之。至其日。益果載酒如期而至矣。酒半酣。益曰釣鯉者以鰕。卽鹿者以由。我當先之。遂書五言律四韻一首。卽僧所稱韻也。敬命有若搆思者。遂和一首。益復用其韻。題一首。敬命卽次之。如是者已盡四首矣。仍以巨杯相屬。已經屢巡。猶不至亂。敬命曰。禮無不答。我亦有以酬之。又押其韻。有曰。幽芳空谷裡。恠物大江濆。餘忘之矣。益憚之。瞑目投杯。佯若沈醉。托以起旋。使侍婢牽之。已拂衣乘馬而去矣 |

| When Ko Kyŏngmyŏng was staying idly at home in Kwangju, Chŏlla province, Sŏ Ik was the prefect (t’aesu) of a neighboring county. A monk who was a close friend of Sŏ’s stayed in Sŏ’s county for many days and then was heading off to Kwangju, Chŏlla province, to see Ko and ask for his favor. Sŏ said, “On a certain day, I shall come and visit Ko. Please extend my greeting to him.” Arriving in Kwangju, the monk visited Ko and delivered him the words from Sŏ. Ko treated the monk with sincerity and responded to him with some poems in his collection. Then he asked, “What poems has Sŏ composed lately?” The monk replied, “Four poems with four rhymes.” Ko asked, “Do you remember the rhymes?” The monk replied, “As far as I can remember, they had rhymes such as ‘cloud’ and ‘to be utterly defeated’.” Ko thought to himself, “If Sŏ comes, he will surely challenge me with poetry and wine. Reckoning that with his talent, he cannot respond with impromptu poems on site, Sŏ must in advance compose some poems in order to embarrass me. The four poems the monk mentioned must be for our future banquet.” Then Ko also composed six poems using those rhymes in advance and waited for him. When the day came, sure enough, Sŏ brought wine and arrived as scheduled. When the wine was about half done, Sŏ said, “To catch a carp, one needs a shrimp. To catch a deer, one needs a guiding deer. Therefore, I shall begin first.” Then he wrote down a five-character quatrain exactly with the rhymes the monk had told Ko. Ko pretended to think then responded with a poem. Sŏ wrote another poem using those rhymes, and Ko again matched him with a responding poem. In this way, they finished exchanging four poems each. Then they offered big cups of wine to each other. After repeated rounds, still none of them showed signs of intoxication. Then Ko said, “In order not to be disrespectful, I will again answer to your rhymes,” and said, 幽芳空谷裏怪物大江潰 In a fragrant and empty valley,a monster from great river is utterly defeated.I forgot the rest of the poem. Terrified, Sŏ closed his eyes and threw away the cup, pretending to be really drunk. Saying he had to go urinate, Sŏ got up and excused himself, and was led outside by a female servant. Then flying his robe in the air, he quickly hopped on the horse and left. |
