When Chief Minister Sim Sugyŏng was young, as Second Deputy Director in the Office of Royal Decrees (chikchehak) acting as a Pacification Commissioner (sunmu ŏsa), he went to P’yŏngan province. In P’yŏngyang, there was a kisaeng he had feelings for and outside the city gate there was a grotto called the Beauties’ Grotto, where kisaengs were buried. Chief Minister Sim wrote the following poem, Your letter was filled with words of a solemn vow. I promise that someday we shall be together in the underworld.A man’s death, after all, cannot be avoided.I shall be a ghost in the Beauties’ Grotto. Later, when he was Governor (kamsa) of Ch’ungch’ŏng province, a kisaeng came in with a scroll for lyrics and asked poet Kwŏn Ŭngin to write on it. In the human affairs, if two people share their thoughtsit matters not whether they are from north or south.Just do not become a ghost in the Beauties’ Grotto! When Sim saw it, he laughed and said, “Kwŏn Ŭngin must have been here. Quickly invite him in.” Kwŏn was called on and Sim made him write a poem. Your widely sung poem “White Snow”I have long known its tune. From a road behind the blue clouds, belatedly I behold your face. The P’yŏngyang kisaeng told her family, “When I die, you must write on the tomb stone, ‘The Tomb of the Concubine of Second Deputy Director Sim Sugyŏng’.” After she died, Sim’s office was already high. Her family erected her tomb stone and wrote on it “The Tomb of the Concubine of Second Deputy Director Sim Sugyŏng.” She died as he did not keep his promise because the law forbade people from P’yŏngan and Hamgyŏng provinces to move to another place.
