Original Text

When I was young, I met poet Chŏng Chisŭng at my father-in-law Sin Sik’s 申栻 (16th century) house. I asked him, “Chŏng Saryong traveled the Diamond Mountains and left no great (ka) work. Only a short quatrain is considered a masterpiece (chŏlch’ang). Can you verify this?” Chŏng Chisŭng replied, “The ancients composed poems on the mountains, but no one captured the image of the mountains. As for Chŏng Saryong’s poem, Twelve thousand peaks I have admired and now return. Swish, swoosh! Rustling yellow leaves stroke my autumn robe.At Chŏngyang Monastery, in wind and rain, incense burns through the night. Qu Yuan knew his wrongsonly at age forty. I believe it is an excellent (ka) poem but even if it is about Hyangnim Monastery and Chŏngt’o Monastery, it will still be good. Hyangnim and Chŏngt’o are ordinary temples in the mountains of Hanyang. Only the two verses in Kwŏn Kŭn’s poem, Precipitous and towering thousands of peaks. From azure clouds emerge a jade-white lotus flower. described the appearance (hyŏngyong) of the Diamond Mountains well.” Thinking about it today, truly he can be called someone with whom one can discuss poetry.
