| 鄭之升。幼時。未有室家私娼女。父母憂其妨業。奪冠履。囚之密室。其友以女間通。之升以詩答之曰。梨花風雨掩重門。靑鳥飛時見淚痕。一死可能忘此別。九原猶作斷膓魂。之升隨其舅如德川。始與魚川察訪論交。以折簡相問。用俗間書辭爲詩曰。謹承書問慰難勝。保拙無非下念仍。細柳營中初識面。生陽關裡更桃燈。孤雲落日同相憶。斗酒長篇獨不能。餘祝萬安懷縷縷。伏惟尊照鄭之升。其發言成詩。才氣蕩溢如此。時有僧自逍遙山遊香山而歸。之升於德川途中相遇。題其詩卷曰。爾自西來我亦西。春風一杖路高低。何年明月逍遙寺。共听東林杜宇啼。香山逍遙山。余所愛玩者。尤於此詩不忘也。惜乎。之人也。以如此之才。而不成一名。早夭。甚嘆 |

| When Chŏng Chisŭng was young and not yet married, he privately kept a kisaeng. His parents worried that she might hamper his study. They took away his cap and shoes, confining him into a backroom. A friend of his friend delivered him a letter from her. Chŏng replied to her with a poem, 梨花風雨掩重門靑鳥飛時見淚痕一死可能忘此別九原猶作斷腸魂 Pear blossoms fall in the storm, and I hide behind double gates. When the blue bird takes wings, I see your tear stains. Only when I am dead, will I be able to forget this separation.In the Nine Springs still risethe spirits of the broken-hearted. Chŏng went to Tŏkch’ŏn county, P’yŏngan province, with his uncle and there began a friendship with an official at Ŏch’ŏn station. They wrote letters to each other, and Chŏng turned everyday language into a poem. 謹承書問慰難勝保拙無非下念仍細柳營中初識面生陽館裏更挑燈孤雲落日同相憶鬥酒長篇獨不能余祝萬安懷縷縷伏惟尊照鄭之升 Holding your letter respectfully brings overwhelming consolation.You not only care for me but also think of me still.
