Farmers’ moon divination practiced on the fifteenth day of the first month is not found in ancient records. Yet Koreans have been practicing that to foretell the year’s good and bad harvest, and it has proven to be very accurate. Ch’a Ullo 車雲輅 ((b. 1599; sobriquet Ch’angju [Blue Islet]) once wrote a recent style poem in eight verses, “Farmers’ Moon Divination” 農家候月, which said, 農家正月望常候月升天近北豐山峽稍南稔海邊赤疑焦草木白怕漲川淵圓滿深還黑方知大有年 Farmers gaze at the first moon, always making predictions from the rising moon.Close to north, mountain gorges will be plentiful.Slightly south, coastal areas will have good harvest.Red, then they fear plants and trees will be scorched.White, then they are afraid rivers and pools will rise. Perfectly round, with a deep color and black spots, then they know it will be a year of great harvest.
