From early age, U Hongjŏk was renowned for his talent. When he was seven years old, elders made him compose a couplet using the words “old” 老 and “spring” 春. The snow on the old man’s head—spring breeze cannot blow it away. All were amazed, but those who understood quietly realized that he would die young. When his friend Chŏng Sangŭi 鄭象義 (chinsa 1582) was appointed a Superintendent (ch’ambong) at Yŏngsung Hall and was moving to P’yŏngyang, U presented a poem to him that said, 鄭虔才名三十年秋風匹馬向西關愁絕浿江干像義白雲千里漢南山 Zheng Qian gained fame for his talent at age thirty.Through autumn winds on horseback, you head to the western region. The P’ae River grieves because of Sangŭi,for the white clouds are a thousand li away at the mountain south of the Han River. No one understood the poem’s meaning, but not long after Chŏng arrived in P’yŏngyang, he heard the news of U’s passing. Contemporaries considered it a poetic omen (sich’am).
