白沙李相國。戊午春。諫廢大妃。時議。將寘둘치極典。嗾鷹犬上疏。請斬者日三四上。大司憲李覺大司諫尹訒等。請圍籬安置於絶島。乃令遠竄。初配關西。爲嗾鷹犬。請置絶塞。移配六鎭。又移三水。光海特移北靑。出城之日。有詩一絶。白日陰陰晝晦微。朔風吹裂猿征衣。遼東城郭應依舊。只恐令威去不歸。聞者泣下。未幾卒。人謂詩讖

Korean Translation

백사(白沙) 이 상국(李相國)이 무오년(1618, 광해군10) 봄에 대비(大妃)를 폐위한 일을 간하자 시의(時議)가 극전(極典)을 적용하려고 하면서 하수인들을 사주한 결과 참형(斬刑)에 처하라고 요청하는 상소가 하루에도 서너 번씩 올라오곤 하였다. 이때 대사헌 이병(李覮)과 대사간 윤인(尹訒) 등이 절도(絶島)에 위리안치(圍籬安置)시키라고 청하자 상이 멀리 유배보내도록 하여 처음에 관서(關西)로 귀양보내었다. 이에 다시 하수인들을 사주해서 절새(絶塞)에 놔두도록 청하여 육진(六鎭)에 이배(移配)했다가 또 삼수(三水)로 옮겼는데 상이 특별히 북청(北靑)으로 옮기게 하였다. 도성을 떠나던 날 절구(絶句) 한 수를 읊기를, 태양이 빛을 감춰 대낮에도 어두운데 / 白日陰陰晝晦微 북풍이 불어닥쳐 길손 옷깃을 찢는구나 / 朔風吹裂遠征衣 요동 땅 그 성곽은 옛날 그대로 있을텐데 / 遼東城郭應依舊 정령위(丁令威) 한 번 가서 못 돌아올까 염려되네 / 只恐令威去不歸 라고 하였는데 이를 듣고 모두 눈물을 흘렸다. 얼마 지나지 않아 죽으니, 사람들이 시참으로 여겼다.

English Translation

In the spring of muo year (1618), Minister Yi Hangbok criticized the deposing of queen dowager. At the time, those wishing to sentence him to an extreme punishment called on falcons and hounds to present three to four memorials a day, demanding his beheading. Inspector-General (taesahŏn) Yi Kak 李覺 (b. 1561) and Censor General (taesagan) Yun In 尹訒 (1555–1623) and others requested he be subjected to confinement in a remote island so Yi Hangbok was banished far away. He was first exiled to P’yŏngan province, but because falcons and hounds demanded him be moved to a remote frontier, he was transferred to the Six Towns, then again to Samsu. Then King Kwanghaegun ordered a special move to Pukch’ŏng. The day he left the city, he wrote the following quatrain, 白日陰陰晝晦微朔風吹裂遠征衣遼東城郭應依舊只恐令威去不歸 Bright sun has dimmed and the day is gloomy.The north wind blows, rending my clothes for a long journey.The city of Liaodong must be as before.I’m only afraid like Ding Lingwei once gone I will not return. Those who heard it wept. Not long after, he died, and people said the poem was an omen (sich’am).
