義州統軍亭。臨三國之界。山川奇壯。求之天下。亦鮮其儷自古韻人題咏非不多。無能道其形容氣像者。鄭松江澈。少年時。爲遠接使從事官。有一絶曰。我欲過江去。直登松鶻山。西招華表鶴。相與戱雲間。雖非大作。亦自奇拔可傳。其後。詞客之來咏者。未見有及之者

Korean Translation

의주(義州) 통군정(統軍亭)은 세 나라의 경계에 위치하면서 경치가 장관이니 온 세상에서 다 찾아보아도 그 짝을 구하기가 힘들 것이다. 그래서 예로부터 시인들이 이곳을 주제로 읊은 시가 많지 않은 것이 아니지만 그 형세와 기상을 제대로 표현한 경우는 있지 않았다. 그런데 송강(松江) 정철(鄭澈)이 연소한 나이에 원접사(遠接使)의 종사관(從事官)이 되어 절구 한 수를 짓기를, 내가 강을 건너가서는 / 我欲過江去 곧바로 송골산에 오르고 싶네 / 直登松鶻山 서쪽에서 화표주(華表柱)의 학 불러 내다가 / 西招華表鶴 구름 속에서 서로 한 번 놀아보려네 / 相與戲雲間 이라 하였는데, 이 시가 대작(大作)은 아니라 하더라도 스스로 기발하여 뒤에 전할 만하다 하겠다. 그 뒤에 시인 묵객들이 와서 읊은 것 가운데 이런 정도의 수준을 보여주는 시는 아직 보지 못하였다.

English Translation

Ŭiju’s T’onggun Pavilion in P’yŏngan province, situated near the borders of the Three Kingdoms, reveals outstandingly grand mountains and rivers unrivaled in the world. Since long ago, poets who wrote about this scenery are not few, yet none was able to describe (hyŏngyong) the scenery (kisang). When he was still young, Chŏng Ch’ŏl became an assistant to Official Welcoming Foreign Envoys (wŏnjŏpsa) and wrote the following quatrain, 我欲過江去直登松鶻山西招華表鶴相與戲雲間 I wish to go beyond the riverand climb straight up Pine Falcon Mountain. From west, I beckon the cranes on ornate columns to come and play with me in the clouds. Although it is a not a masterpiece (taejak), it is extraordinary (ki) in its own way and deserves to be transmitted. Of the poems on the scenery written since, I am yet to find one that measures up to this.
