洪相國暹號忍齋。議政彦弼之子也。少時。爲金安老所陷。受庭刑。竄興陽。安老敗。遂光顯。其刑也。有人言於蘇贊成世讓曰。惜夫。退之之止於斯也。贊成曰。此人必有前程。豈遽死也。其人曰。何以知之。贊成曰。曩日。課製灔澦堆詩結句曰。淸猿啼不盡。送我上危灘。如此詩句。可知人休咎云。竟入相二十年。年八十二卒。詩亦可以占人窮達如是哉

Korean Translation

홍 상국 섬(洪相國暹)의 자(字)는 퇴지(退之)요 호는 인재(忍齋)로서 의정(議政) 언필(彦弼)의 아들이다. 젊었을 때 김안로(金安老)의 모함에 떨어져 정형(庭刑)을 받고 흥양(興陽)으로 유배되었는데, 안로가 망하자 마침내 크게 현달(顯達)하였다. 그가 형을 받을 때 어떤 사람이 소 찬성 세양(蘇贊成世讓)에게 말하기를 “퇴지가 여기에서 끝나게 되다니 애석하다.”고 하였는데, 찬성이 말하기를 “이 사람은 필시 앞길이 유망하게 될 것인데 어찌 갑자기 죽겠는가.” 하자, 그 사람이 어떻게 그것을 아느냐고 물으니, 찬성이 말하기를 “전일 염여퇴(灔澦堆 중국 양자강 구당협(瞿唐峽) 상류의 큰 암석이 있는 곳)라는 제목의 과제시(課製詩) 결구(結句)에서 그가 ‘원숭이 끊임없이 울어대면서 급한 여울 올라가는 나를 전송하누나[淸猿啼不盡送我上危灘].’라고 하였는데, 이런 시구를 지었기 때문에 그 사람의 운명을 알 수 있게 된 것이다.” 하였다고 한다. 그런데 홍섬이 마침내 의정부에 정승으로 들어가 20년 동안이나 지내다가 나이 82세에 죽었으니, 시를 통해서도 이처럼 사람의 궁달(窮達)을 점칠 수 있는 것인가.

English Translation

Minister Hong Sŏm (sobriquet Injae [Endurance Studio]) was a son of Chief State Councilor (yŏngŭijŏng) Hong Ŏnp’il. As a young man, he was framed by Kim Allo and, after being found guilty, was banished to Hŭngyang in Chŏlla province. Once Kim was removed from power, Hong was exonerated. When Hong received his sentence, someone said to State Councilor (ch’amsŏng) So Seyang, “How pitiful! Hong Sŏm’s journey ends here.” So replied, “This man will certainly have a further journey ahead. How then could he die?” The man asked, “How do you know this?” So replied, “In the last verse of his poem ‘Yanyu Mound’” 灩滪堆composed during his daily lesson, Hong wrote, 淸猿啼不盡送我上危灘 The gibbons cry without end,sending me up to a dangerous shore. From a poetic verse like this, we can know his good or ill fortunes.” In the end, Hong served as a minister for twenty years and died at the age of eight-two. Ah! Such is a poem’s ability to foretell a person’s troubles and achievements!
