盧相國守愼。號蘇齋。乙巳名流也。謫珍島二十年。明廟末年。量移。宣祖踐位。卽徵入館閣。未十年。置之端揆。眷遇極盛。爲文章奇健。爲一時領袖。其在海島所作詩。多警絶。膾炙人口。如別其弟詩一句曰。日暮林鳥啼有血。天寒哀鴈影無隣。謁孝陵詩一句曰。有實陵名孝。無私諡曰仁。咏史一句曰。物議當年定。人心後世公等作。可見其全體矣
Korean Translation
노 상국 수신(盧相國守愼)은 자는 과회(寡悔) 호는 소재(蘇齋)로서 을사사화(乙巳士禍) 때의 명류(名流)이다. 20년 동안 진도(珍島)에 유배되어 있다가 명묘(明廟) 말년에 양이(量移 환경이 나은 곳으로 유배지를 옮기는 것)되었으며, 선조(宣祖)가 즉위하자 곧바로 부름을 받고 관각(館閣)에 몸을 담았는데, 10년이 채 못 되어 단규(端揆 우의정)의 지위에 오르는 등 임금으로부터 지극한 은총을 받았다. 문장 또한 기건(奇健)하여 당대의 으뜸이었는데, 특히 섬에 있을 때 지은 시 가운데 놀랄 만한 절창이 많아 인구(人口)에 회자(膾炙)되었다. 가령 그의 아우와 작별할 때 지은 시 1구를 보면,

석양 숲속 까마귀들 피 토하듯 울어대고 / 日暮林烏啼有血 썰렁한 하늘 저 기러기 슬프구나 짝도 없네 / 天寒哀雁影無隣

이라 하였고, 효릉(孝陵 인종(仁宗)의 능)을 참배했을 때의 시 1구를 보면,

그런 일 실제 있어 효릉이라 명명했고 / 有實陵名孝 사심이 없었기에 인종이라 시호했네 / 無私諡曰仁

이라 하였고, 이런 일에 대해서 읊은 시 1구를 보면,

논의야 그 당시에 정해질 수 있겠지만 / 物議當年定 인심은 후세에야 공정해지는 법이라오 / 人心後世公

이라 하였는데, 이런 작품들을 통해서 그의 전체(全體)를 살펴볼 수 있을 것이다.

English Translation
Minister No Susin was one of the distinguished literati persecuted during the literati purge in the year of ŭlsa (1545). He spent twenty years in exile in Chin Island, Chŏlla province. In the final year of the reign of King Myŏngjong (1567), he was moved closer. After taking throne, King Sŏnjo summoned him to court and in less than ten years he was installed as Chief Minister. Under the king’s special favor, No flourished. His writings were unique and robust (kigŏn), and he became a literary leader of his time. Many of the poems he wrote during exile are incomparably moving (kyŏngjŏl) and were relished (hoeja) and praised by people. For example, a verse in a farewell poem to his brother reads, 日暮林烏啼有血天寒哀雁影無鄰 At sunset, crows in the woodscry out blood. In the frigid sky, a mournful goosecasts its companionless shadow. A verse in his poem on paying homage at Hyo (Filial Piety) Mausoleum 謁孝陵reads, 有實陵名孝無私謚曰仁 Exemplary, your mausoleum was named Filial Piety.Selfless, you were posthumously titled Benevolence. A verse in a poem on history 詠史 reads, 物議當年定人心後世公 Arguments can be settled that very year.Legacies are known by later generations. From poems such as these, we can see his whole style (ch’e).
