Original Text

English Translation
When Chŏng Ch’ŏl (sobriquet Songgang [Pine River]) was in Namjung, Ch’ungch’ŏng province, after being dismissed from his office, he wrote the following poem, South of the palace wall, the trees are lush.In dreams, far faraway, I ascend the Jade Hall. At the cry of a cuckoo, the mountain bamboo cracks. The white hair of this lonely official grows longer at that moment. The language (ŏ) is extremely startling (kyŏngch’aek). Also, in the last verse of a poem presented to someone, he wrote, How can I become a boulderand stand tall by a sunset river? This also is exceptionally beautiful (subal) and its poetic mood (ŭich’i) naturally fine.
