松江以御史。出嶺北至咸山。十月見菊花。遂賦一絶曰。天外無鴻信不來。思歸日上望鄕臺。殷勤十月咸山菊。不爲重陽爲客開。及還朝。朴相公忠元。迎謂之曰。是乃殷勤十月咸山菊。不爲重陽爲客開者乎。

Korean Translation
병인년에 정송강이 직지어사(直指御使)의 직함을 띠고 영북(嶺北 함경도)으로 나아가, 함산(咸山)에 이르렀다. 10월에 국화를 보고 칠언절구 한 수를 지었는데, 하늘 밖에 기러기가 없어 소식이 오지 않아 갑갑하구나 / 天外無鴻信不來 돌아가고픈 마음 안타까워 날마다 망향대에 올라 봄이여 / 思歸日上望鄕臺 은근히 피어나는 10월 함산의 국화는 / 殷勤十月咸山菊 중양(9월 9일)을 위하여 핀 것이 아니라 나그네를 위하여 피었구나 / 不爲重陽爲客開 하였다. 조정으로 돌아오니, 상공(相公) 박충원(朴忠元)이 맞이하면서 말하기를, “이러한 까닭으로, 은근히 피어나는 10월의 함산 국화는 / 殷勤十月咸山菊 중양을 위하여 핀 것이 아니라 나그네를 위하여 피었구나 / 不爲重陽爲客開 란 것을 지었구려.” 하고 환영했다.

English Translation

As a Censor (ŏsa), Chŏng Ch’ŏl traveled from Hamgyŏng province and arrived at Hamsan. It was the tenth month, and seeing chrysanthemums, he composed the following quatrain, 天外無鴻信不來思歸日上望鄉坮殷勤十月咸山菊不為重陽為客開 Beyond the sky, without the geese, no letters come. Thinking about a day of return, I ascend the Manghyang Tower. Lovely tenth monthchrysanthemums of Hamsanbloom not for the Double Ninth but for this traveler. When he returned to the court, Minister Pak Ch’ungwŏn greeted him and asked, “Are you the one who said, ‘Lovely tenth month chrysanthemum of Hamsan bloom not for the Double Ninth but for this traveler?’”
