In the waning years of Koryŏ, there was a poet who wished to write beautiful (su) verses. Wearing a short straw rain cape and riding a yellow ox, he traveled between Ch’ŏnsu Monastery and Sach’ŏn. Day after day, after twisting his moustache for nearly a hundred days, he was only able to write one verse, which was, 白鷗飛割碧山腰 White gulls glide through the middle of the green mountain. It is just like the couplet at Yŏn’gwang Pavilion which end with the following lines, To one side of the long city wall runs a slow running river. To the east of the vast wilderness stand dots of mountains. |
