In his childhood, my distant older cousin Second Inspector (chungsŭng) Kim Chunggo 金仲固 (18th century) wrote an examination style poem on a blank stele, and the poem became well-known. His poem “Inkstick” 詠墨 written to a rhyme said, 漆身同豫讓涅背似岳飛首陽千古節幾入騷人詩 With a black body like Yu Rang’s and a tattooed back like Yue Fue’s,with a head lifted with ageless integrity, how many times have you entered poets’ poems? It is a great achievement. My maternal cousin Minister Kim Ku was not particularly good at poetic meters (siyul), but he sometimes wrote startling expressions (kyŏngch’aek). When he was at the Office of Special Advisors (Hongmun’gwan), he wrote a couplet with military official Yi Chŏnggyŏm 李廷謙 (1648–1709). Yi wrote the first line. Excellent lines from the Phoenix Pond are not lesser than Cen Shen’s.And Kim responded with the following line, Sentiments from the Military Officeare rather like Pan Yue’s.All who were present praised Kim’s steadfastness. Once, matching a friend’s poem to the rhyme word “man” 夫, he wrote, 白發侵凌君欲老風塵撩亂我非夫 White hairs are encroaching, and you are getting old.Swirled in the dusty wind,I am not a man. They say that it outshone all other matching poems.
