When Hong Manjong was young, together with Kim Sŏkchu he visited a pavilion in the outskirts. One day, a monk in a white robe carrying a book sack came to greet them. Kim asked the monk, “Where do you come from and what books are you carrying?” The monk replied, “I have lived in the Diamond Mountains for ten years and in Chiri Mountain for another ten years. Today, I am heading to Myohyang Mountain. Passing the gate, I dared to come in and greet you.” Then he opened his sack and took out the book inside. It was a volume of Kŭmganggyŏng ogahae (Interpretations of the Diamond Sutra by Five Masters). The monk then told them in detail about the beauty of the P’ungak Mountains and Turyu Mountain, their thousand peaks and ten thousand ravines, as if they were just before one’s eyes. Before departing, the monk asked, “Could you each write me a poem? They will surely add to my traveling sack.” Hong first wrote a quatrain. With a monk’s cane, following the clouds, you pass a pavilion in the wild, calmly with a sackcarrying a sutra. You tell of your visit to the Ten Thousand Cascade Grotto, and of the beauty of Twin Creek. The mountains are greenon the mountain man’s tongue. The Ten Thousand Cascade Grotto is in the Diamond Mountains, and Twin Stream in Chiri Mountain. Kim put down the brush and sighed in admiration. Hong encouraged Kim to continue writing but Kim said, “In this poem, you truly have reached a level of wonder (myogyŏng) which I cannot possibly imitate.”
