Sin Kwanghan became famous throughout the world for his poetry, and he was especially skillful (kong) in seven-character quatrains. Once when he passed by Minister Kim Sep’il’s old residence, feeling moved, he wrote a quatrain. Of those who were then exiled, how many now remain?Halting the horse in the east wind, my heart breaks alone. At the misty and rainy Kae Mountain, traveling on the Day of the Cold Food,I cannot bear the sound of flute coming from the sunset village. He sent the poem to Sŏng Sech’ang and asked him to write a matching poem. Sŏng thought, “The poem is surely clear and excellent (ch’ŏngjŏl). He used Kae Mountain as the topic to speak allegorically about consuming cold food. But is there really such a mountain?” Sŏng sent a servant to inquire, and indeed there was a mountain named Kaehyŏn about a five-hundred-foot distance from Kim’s old residence. Sŏng slapped his lap and said, “This truly is something that I cannot reach.” Then he stopped attempting to match the poem. It is perhaps because although a poet’s use analogy is not the most superior quality, to use it in such refined and intimate (chŏngch’in) fashion as in Sin’s poem is not something that can be easily attained. Sŏng’s praise of Sin’s poem is appropriate.
