許眉叟穆。宰三陟以後。自言。有疾則恒見草笠布衣者。不知自何來。奔走供役。辭去則疾已。以為異驗。及壬戌病革。謂其家人曰。草笠者常隨不去。吾其死乎。囗占一絕曰。有感必有應。此理本不虛。殷人嚴鬼神。鬼神豈欺佘。臨沒。又作一絕曰。說讀古人書。行年八十餘。所為百無餘。拙戇無如余。及沒。草笠布衣者與許。現夢於他人。世疑其伽倻後身云夫許大岳之胤意。許取其姓而用事耶。若爾則襯切
After serving as Prefect of Samch’ŏk, Kangwŏn province, Hŏ Mok 許穆 (1595–1682; sobriquet Misu [Old Man]) said, “When I am ill, I keep seeing a man in a straw hat and commoner’s clothes. I don’t know where he comes from, but he runs around busily at work. After he departs, I fall ill. I think this is a strange omen.” In the imsul year (1682), he was dismissed from his post due to illness. He told his family, “The man in the straw hat is following me everywhere and not leaving. Could this mean I will die?” Then he composed a quatrain in voice, 有感必有應此理本不虛殷人嚴鬼神鬼神豈欺余 Where there is action, there shall be reaction.This principle was not an empty saying at first.The people of Shang revered ghosts and spirits.Why then ghosts and sprits would deceive me? Before death, he wrote another quatrain, 說讀古人書行年八十餘所為百無如拙憨無如余 Reading the books of the ancients,I have journeyed over eighty years.Nothing I have done was as intended. There is none as foolish as me. After he died, Hŏ and the man in the straw hat and commoner’s clothes appeared in another person’s dream. People wonder if he became an immortal in later life. Original annotation: The Xu (Kor. Hŏ) were the heirs of Taiyue. Could it be that he chose the reference (yongsa) based on his surname? If so, it is an effective one.
