Im Kyŏng on
Hyŏnho’s Trivial Tales (Compendium of Remarks on Poetry)
Entry Text
Im Yŏng was a prolific writer. In his late years, he dedicated himself to study and delved into the Classics. A phrase by him reads, Over the empty eaves, the moon moves the hues of rivers and mountains. On a quiet night, the book opens the heart of Heaven and Earth. Kim Ch’anghyŏp gave it an utmost praise when he heard it. But some thought the expression “the heart of Heaven and Earth” is grandiose (horak) and insubstantial (musil). That Kim did not notice this flaw (cha), couldn’t it be because he did not examine the poem carefully?
