栗谷先生。甞就洪荷衣迪家。金孝元。許篈兄弟。方在座。荷衣示近作一絕。苔深窮巷客來稀。鳥啼聲中午枕推。茶罷小牕無箇事。落荷高下不齊飛。栗谷亟賞之。仍笑曰。詩辭儘好。而落句意頗不平。何也。荷衣驚問。何以知之。先生笑曰。有參差不正齊之意。若使胸中坦平。必無此等語。荷衣笑謝曰。年少輩。果有劾公之意。搆成一文字。未了之際。偶有此吟。不謂公之明鑑至此也。此正似蔡仲郞螳螂捕蟬之意。詩之感發性情如此
Master Yi I once visited Hong Chŏk’s 洪迪 (1549–1591; sobriquet Haŭija [Recluse in Lotus Leaf Attire]) residence. Kim Hyowŏn 金孝元 (l532–1590) and Hŏ Pong and his brother were also there. Hong showed them a quatrain he had recently composed. 苔深窮巷客來稀鳥啼聲中午枕推茶罷小窗無個事落花高下不齊飛 In the narrow lane thick with mosses,visitors are few.At the sound of chirping birds,I push away the pillow after a midday slumber.I finish my tea by the small window.There is nothing for me to do.Falling petals, high and low,flutter in disarray. Yi liked the poem very much, but with a smile said, “The words (sa) are exceptionally fine (chinho). But the meaning of the last line is quite unsettling. Why is it so?” Startled Hong asked, “How do you know that?” Yi smiled and said, “It has a dissonant message. When your heart is truthful and at ease, you would not be writing such an expression.” Hong smiled, thanked him and said, “I wished to write to you in a prose that some young scholars are planning your impeachment. I have not yet finished writing the letter. Then I happened to write this poem. How great indeed is your perception!” This is just like the story of Cai Yong being told about a praying mantis poised to catch a cicada. In this manner, poetry expresses temperament (sŏngjŏng).
