Minister Song Siyŏl’s poem “Singing My Thoughts” 詠懷, written while in exile, reads, 蠻土休言歲月長安身何處不吾鄉風吹木葉根猶靜霜折蘭枝意自香多謝晦翁提我耳須知康節刮人眶個中密切工夫在鄒聖當年戒助忘 Please stop saying in the southern land,I am spending a long time!Where I find myself at rest, isn’t that my hometown? The wind blows the leaves on a tree, yet its roots are still. The frost bends the branches of an orchid, but its will by nature is fragrant.I am grateful to Zhu Xifor guiding my ears, and remember Shao Yongfor wiping my eyes.In everything, if I look carefully, there are lessons to be learned.Sagely Mencius, that year, cautioned against forcing or forgetting. Despite suffering from hardships, the poem has the message (ŭi) of following one’s lot free of care. From it we can see his unyielding principle became even stronger.
