As a youth, Recluse Hŏ Kyŏk 許格 (17th century; sobriquet Ch’anghae [Blue Sea]) learned poetry from Yi Annul and acquired Yi’s style. In the year of pyŏngja during the Chongzhen reign (1636; Injo 14), Hŏ stopped pursuing a career in civil service. Calling himself a Ming loyalist, he rarely entered the city and died after living a long life of over eighty years. His poem “Spring Scrolls” 春帖 reads, 栗里陶潛宅荊州王粲樓眼前無長物江漢一孤舟 In Chestnut Village is Tao Qian’s house. In Bramble District is Wang Can’s tower. Before my eyes, there is nothing of worthon the Han River in a solitary boat. When Yi Kyŏngsŏk was leaving for Beijing, Hŏ gave him a farewell poem which said, 天下有山吾已遁域中無帝子何朝 Wherever there is a mountain,I have already taken shelter. There is no emperor in that land. Why do you then go to pay homage? His moral integrity and poetic style (sigyŏk) are equally lofty (ko). Before his death, he burnt all his manuscripts and wrote the following quatrain, 簇簇千峰削玉層悠悠一水繞村澄臨流故斫桃花樹恐引漁郎入五陵 A thousand peaks cluster together.Tiers of jade are steep. A river stretches on,encircling the village so clear.I come to the water and cut down the peach tree in bloom, fearing it will draw the fishermanto enter the Five Hills. The poem shows his will. Who can say a person like him lived in our time?
