Someone recited Kim Ch’anghŭp’s poem on traveling to P’yŏngan province, which reads, 雪岳幽棲客關河又薄遊隨身有淸月卜夜在高樓劍舞魚龍靜杯行星漢流雞鳴相顧起留興木蘭舟 A guest perching deep in Sŏrak Mountainonce again pays a quick visit to the frontier land.A clear moon follows meas I spend the night at a high tower. The swords dance. The fish and dragons are quiet. The cups go around. The River of Stars flows on. The roosters crow. We look at each other and rise, leaving behind our elation in the magnolia boat. Sin Chŏngha 申靖夏 (1680–1715; styled Chŏngbo) commented on the poem, saying, “The opening lines are ordinary (pŏm). The third and fourth lines are immortal (sŏn). The fifth and sixth lines are bold (ho). The closing lines are ethereal (kwi). In one poem, there are four grades.” I do not know yet if this indeed is a comprehensive assessment.
