金崇謙。號君山。農岩之子也。有絕才。甞曰。詩之於人正如貌之不能廢眉。其論如此。甞有時危百慮聽江聲之句。詩人洪世泰。方食。聞此句。失箸。然其詩蒼老太早。且過於悲傷。愛金才者。以此為憂。今果遽天。苗而不秀。惜哉
Kim Ch’anghyŏp’s son, Kim Sunggyŏm 金崇謙 (1682–1700; sobriquet Kunsan [Mt. River Goddess]), had exceptional talents. It was once said, “Poetry is indispensable to a person just as eyebrows are indispensable to one’s countenance.” This was what Kim Sunggyŏm was like. He once composed the following line, 時危百慮聽江聲 In dangerous times, a hundred worries rise,listening to the sound of a river.Poet Hong Set’ae 洪世泰 (1653–1725) was having a meal when he heard this line, and he dropped his chopsticks. His poetry matured (ch’angno) too early and was overly sorrowful (pisang). Those who cherished his talent was concerned by it. Now suddenly he died before his time. He sprouted but could not bloom. Ah, how pitiful!
