Since antiquity, poets have found difficulty in writing a poem to a topic and not in writing poetic lines. The difficulty lies in matching the topic. I see the reflections of trees in midstream, and hear the sounds of bells from the two shores. became a famous line for Jinshan Monastery. The tower gazes at the sun above the blue sea.The gate faces the waves of the Zhe River. became a widely sung line for Lingyin Monastery. It is because when one’s delight (ch’wi) and poetic landscape (kyŏng) meet, one can describe a true scenery (chin’gyŏng). To one side of the long city wall runs a slow running river. To the east of the vast wilderness stand dots of mountains.Sŏ Kŏjŏng once overlooked it. Only when he climbed the tower and read the poem, did he begin to realize that the poem’s description was like a painting. I wish to go beyond the riverand climb straight up Pine Crane Mountain. From west, I beckon the cranes on ornate columns to come and play with me in the clouds. These two lines are not referred to in connection with T’onggun Pavilion, yet the world regards it as a timeless poetic masterpiece (chŏlchak). Why is this? It is perhaps because the pavilion is located far away in the Liaodong and Mohe region where landscape is boundless and distant. Feeling elated, Chŏng used his imagination (ŭisang) to express the delight (ch’wi) and style (kyŏk) of a drifting hermit. The pavilion he described therefore is no different from any pavilion.
