吳判書道一。號西坡。幼時。逐童隊游戱。至壯洞水閣。時諸名官會集。見吳容貌問曰。爾乃誰家兒。答曰。吾小字某也曰兩班子否曰。吾乃楸灘之孫。公輩不知灘爺耶。諸人異之。問能作詩否。答曰。若飲一大白。則可矣。卽擧觴屬之。以三字呼韻應口對曰。樓頭醉臥吳挺一。松下吟詩柳道三。諸人責以長者名為詩。吳答曰。吳挺一。柳道三相會。出韻三字。安得不爾。一座悚然。又有一句曰。雲愁九疑月千古。水滿三湘秋萬里。趙松谷復陽大奇之。竟有東床之選
Minister (p’ansŏ) O Toil’s sobriquet was Sŏp’a (West Hill). As a child, he was playing with a group of children and arrived at a river pavilion in Changdong. At the time, all renowned officials were gathered there. Seeing O’s appearance and bearing, they asked him, “Which family are you from?” He answered, “My childhood name is so and so.” “Are you a son of a yangban family?” they asked. He responded, “I am a grandson of O Yun’gyŏm 吳允謙 (1559–1636). Do you not know my grandfather?” They were all surprised by him and asked, “Can you write poetry?” O answered, “If I drink a big bowl of wine, then I can.” They took a cup and poured wine in it and chose “three” 三 (sam) as a rhyme word. O then replied to them in voice. 樓頭醉臥吳挺一松下吟詩柳道三 Drunk and reclining at the tower, O Chŏngil.Writing poems under a pine tree, Yu Tosam. All rebuked him for using elders’ names in the poem. O answered them, “O Chŏngil 吳挺一 (1610–1670) and Yu Tosam have met. You chose ‘three’ as the rhyme word. Why is it I cannot use it?” Everyone was astounded. O wrote another line, 雲愁九疑月千古水滿三湘秋萬里 Clouds cast gloom over Nine Towers Mountain.A thousand-year-old moon.The waters fill the Three Xiang Regions.Ten-thousand-li autumn. Cho Pogyang 趙復陽 (1609–1671; sobriquet Songgok [Pine Valley]) was greatly impressed by him and eventually chose O as his son-in-law.
