In his youth, Ko Kyŏngmyŏng was gifted and unrestrained, exuberant in spirit and demeanor. Once he became involved with a kisaeng from Hwanghae province who was intimate with the governor. Before parting, Ko presented her with a regulated verse and wrote it on the hem of her skirt. 立馬江頭別故遲生贈楊柳最高枝佳人緣薄含新態蕩子情深問後期桃李落來寒食節鷓鴣飛去夕陽時草長南浦春波蕩欲採蘋花有所思 Halting the horse by the river,I linger deliberately as we part. The scholar presents a willow twigfrom the tallest branch. The beauty with a little affection for himwears a fresh appearance. The traveling man’s feelings are deepas he inquires about the next time.Peaches and pears fall, then comesthe Cold Food Festival.Partridges fly awaywhen the sun goes down. When grasses are thick at Namp’oand spring waves swell,I will want to pick apple blossomswhile thinking of you. After the kisaeng parted from Ko, she was serving wine before the governor. Suddenly a gust of wind came and lifted her skirt, slightly revealing the traces of ink. The governor looked at it carefully and asked her for an explanation. Not daring to disobey, she told him the truth. The governor sighed and said, “Truly he is a special talent.” Later, when he saw Ko’s father, Censor General (taesagan) Ko Maengyŏng 高孟英 (b. 1502), the governor told him “Your son is gifted and handsome, but he has loose demeanors.” Ko’s father laughed and said, “My son looks like his mother and acts like his father.” The governor smiled.
