| Education Official (hakkwan) Pak Chihwa was a scholar. Although he did not particularly exert effort on poetry, occasionally he wrote poems when moved by inspiration. His poems were lofty in style (kyŏk ko) and profound in meaning (ŭi hyŏn), something people could not reach. His poem on Ch’oe Ch’iwŏn said, 孤雲唐進士初不學神仙蠻觸三韓日風塵四海天英雄安可測眞訣本無傳一去留雙鶴淸風五百年 Solitary Cloud, Tang’s Presented Scholar, at first did not wish to imitate immortals.When the Three Han fought like Man and Chu,dusty winds filled the four seas and the sky.How can heroes be spottedwhen true techniques haven’t been conveyed?Once gone, he only left behind a pair of cranes,and a clear breeze for five hundred years. Savoring (mi) it deeply, one can taste the poem’s inexhaustible (pujin) meaning (ŭisa). |
