Original Text

When Academician (haksa) Ch’oe Kyŏngch’ang was appointed as Case Reviewer (pukp’yŏngsa) of Hamgyŏng province, Yi Tal presented him with “Frontier Songs” 塞下曲 in three poems. One of them reads, 都尉分軍夜斫營漢家金鼓動邊城朝來更聽降胡說西下陰山有伏兵 When the commandant split the troops and struck the enemy camp, the golden drums from the Han court shook up the frontier. In the morning, he hears a surrendered Turkish soldier say,“To the west in the Yin Mountains, there is an ambush. For a time, the poem was widely recited (chŏnyŏng). I once read in a poem by the Tang poet Yu Gu 于鵠 (b. 747), there was a phrase, 度水逢胡說沙陰有伏兵 Crossing the river, I meet a Turkish soldier who says“To the north of the desert, there is an ambush.”Kwŏn Ŭngin’s poem “Traveling on Sea to a Human Abode” 遊海上人家 has a phrase, “Flying seagulls mistakenly enter the balustrade” 鷗飛誤入闌. Then I read in the Song poet He Yi’s 何異 (1129–1209) poem “Huancui Pavilion” 環翠閣, 沙禽占水閑相趁誤入疏簾靜卻回 Wading birds standing in water idly chase each other.Mistakenly entering the bamboo screen, quietly they return. In the past, Liu Chang 劉敞 (1019–1068; styled Yuanfu) poked fun at Ouyang Xiu and said, “Ouyang Xiu borrowed openly and secretly from Han Yu’s writings. What he openly borrowed can be roughly counted, but what he secretly borrowed cannot.” Kwŏn summarized two seven-character lines into one five-character line and only reiterated the original meaning (ŭi). His therefore can be called secret borrowing. But Yi Tal copied the entire phrases, just added a few words, and tried to impress the people of the time. His was not open borrowing but rather stealing with a grave looting skill.
