乙未丙申年間。天將劉提督。綎。領兵往來湖嶺間。幕下帶一書生。往往賦詩。人或傳誦其佳句。而不見其面。不知其名。時我國與倭賊相持。成敗未決。厥書生以蚌鷸之喩。作長律曰。老蚌當陽爲怕寒。野禽何事苦相干。身離窟穴珠胎損。力盡沙灘翠羽殘。閉口豈知開口禍。入頭誰料出頭難。早知俱落漁人手。雲水飛潛各自安。蓋書生見時事搶攘之勢。誤擧漁人之說。畢竟國家重恢。以有今日者。無非上國終始恤小。宣廟跋履戡難之力。書生豈知言者哉。
Korean Translation
을미년(1595, 선조28)과 병신년(1596, 선조29) 사이에 명나라의 장군 제독(提督) 유정(劉綎)이 병사를 이끌고 호남과 영남 사이를 왕래하였는데, 막하에 한 서생을 데리고 다녔다. 가끔씩 시를 지었고, 사람들은 간혹 그의 가구(佳句)를 전하여 읊었으나, 그 얼굴은 본적도 없고 이름도 알지 못하였다. 그때 우리나라와 왜적은 서로 대치하여 승패를 결정하지 못했는데, 그 서생이 방휼(蚌鷸)의 비유를 써서 장률을 지어 이르기를,

늙은 조개 추위 피해 햇볕을 쬐는데 / 老蚌當陽爲怕寒 들새는 무슨 일로 애써 구하였는가 / 野禽何事苦相干 몸은 굴혈 떠나 진주 태는 손상되고 / 身離窟穴珠胎損 여울에서 힘 다해 푸른 깃은 쇠잔타 / 力盡沙灘翠羽殘 입 닫을 때에 열 때의 화를 어찌 알며 / 閉口豈知開口禍 머리 넣을 때에 빼기 어려움 누가 알았으랴 / 入頭誰料出頭難 어부 손에 함께 떨어질 줄 일찍 알았던들 / 早知俱落漁人手 구름과 물속 맘껏 날고 잠겨있을 텐데 / 雲水飛潛各自安

하였다. 서생은 대개 당시의 어지러운 사세(事勢)를 보고 어부지리(漁父之利)의 설을 그릇되게 거론한 것이다. 마침내 국가가 다시 회복되어 오늘날이 있게 된 것은, 상국(上國 명나라)이 한결같이 우리나라를 구휼하고 선조(宣祖)께서 발리(跋履 여러 곳을 다니며 애씀)하시며 난을 극복한 노력이 아님이 없으니, 서생이 어찌 말을 할 줄 아는 자이겠는가.

English Translation
Between the years ŭlmi (1595) and pyŏngsin (1596), Liu Ting 劉綎 (1558–1619), the imperial Commander of the Capital Guards (tidu), toured the area between Chŏlla province and Kyŏngsang province leading his troops. In his camp there was a scholar who often composed poems. Some people widely recited (chŏnsong) excellent phrases by him, yet no one has seen his face nor knows his name. At the time, our country and the Japanese invaders were locked in a stalemate, and the outcome of war had not been decided. Using the analogy of a clam and a snipe, that scholar composed a long regulated verse, which said, 老蚌當陽爲怕寒野禽何事苦相干身離窟穴珠胎損力盡沙灘翠羽殘閉口豈知開口禍入頭誰料出頭難早知俱落漁人手雲水飛潛各自安 An old clam basking in the sun from the fear of cold,why did a wild fowl bother to engage?The clam was removed from its hole, and its pearl was damaged.Struggling with all might on the sandy beach, the bird’s beautiful wings were wounded. When the clam shut its mouth, did it know opening it would lead to calamity?When the bird stuck its head in, did it expecttaking it out would be difficult? Had they known that both would fall in the hands of a fisherman,soaring into the clouds, dipping into the water, each would have been safe. But the scholar, who saw the chaotic situations of the time, wrongly applied the story of the fisherman. After all, the restoration of our country and our very existence today would not have been possible without the generous support from China from start to finish and without the tireless endeavors of King Sŏnjo to quell the calamity. How could that scholar be someone who knew how to speak?
