| 上舍鄭彥訥號一蚩。羅州人。深於學問。人罕知之。每赴科場。以賦屈人。世徒知能於賦。而未嘗見其作詩。少年時遊瑞石山。次林白湖詩一聯曰。怪石夜能虎。矮松秋欲絃。足見其奇。壬辰以後遭亂漂蕩。有醉來千日少。亂後一身多之句。聞者皆稱能做出古人所未道之語。姚合贈劉叉詩一聯曰。避時曾變姓。逃亂似嫌身。與一蚩之意略同。而一蚩不喜奇詩。必不襲姚合之句。金剛經頌曰。富嫌千口少。貧恨一身多。蓋出於此也。 |

| 상사(上舍 진사) 정언눌(鄭彥訥)은 호가 일치(一蚩)이며 본관은 나주(羅州)이다. 학문이 깊었으나 아는 사람은 드물었다. 과장(科場)에 갔을 때마다 부(賦)로써 사람들을 굴복시키니, 세상에서는 부에 능한 것은 알았지만 그가 지은 시를 볼 수는 없었다. 그가 소년 시절에 서석산(瑞石山 무등산)에서 노닐다가 임백호 시의 일련을 차운한
괴석은 밤이면 호랑이가 되고 / 怪石夜能虎 왜송은 가을이면 거문고가 되려 하네 / 矮松秋欲絃 에서 그의 뛰어남을 충분히 볼 수 있다. 임진년 이후 난을 만나 떠돌아다닐 때, 취할 적엔 천일도 적더니 / 醉來千日少 난리에는 일신도 많도다 / 亂後一身多 라는 시 구절을 지었는데, 듣는 사람들은 모두 옛사람들도 말하지 못했던 말을 잘 지어냈다고 칭찬하였다. 요합(姚合)의 〈증유차(贈劉叉)〉 시 일련, 때를 피해 성을 바꿨고 / 避時曾變姓 난을 구함에 몸을 꺼렸네 / 救難似嫌身 도 정언눌의 시의(詩意)와 대략 같다. 그러나 일치는 기묘한 시를 좋아하지 않았으니, 필시 요합의 구절을 답습한 것은 아닐 것이다.《금강경(金剛經)》 송(頌)에 이르기를, 부자는 천 명 먹을 재산도 적다고 투덜대고 / 富嫌千口少 가난한 사람은 한 몸도 많다고 한탄하네 / 貧恨一身多 하였는데, 아마 여기에서 나왔을 것이다. |

| Scholar Chŏng Ŏnnul (sobriquet Ilch’I [One Ignorant]) is a native to Naju, Chŏlla province. He is erudite but few know him. At every examination, he impressed the people with his rhapsody. The world therefore knows that he is good at rhapsody but has not seen his poetry. When Chŏng was young, he visited Sŏsŏk Mountain. A couplet in the poem he wrote in response to Im Che’s poem said, 怪石夜能虎孤松秋欲弦 At night, grotesque rocks can become tigers.In the fall, a lone pine wishes to play his strings.It amply displays his strangeness (ki). A phrase in a poem he wrote at the time of wandering during the Imjin War says, 醉來千日少亂後一身多 When drunk, even a thousand days is short.After the war, even my own body is burdensome.Those who heard it said that Chŏng was able to create the words that the ancients had not uttered. A couplet in Yao He’s 姚合 (779–854) poem “Presented to Liu Cha” 贈劉叉, 避時曾變姓救難似嫌身 To escape turmoil, I changed my surname.To be saved from trouble, I feigned to loathe myself. is somewhat similar to Chŏng’s couplet in meaning (ŭi). But Chŏng did not like to read poetry, so he must have not repeated Yao He’s phrase. It probably came from a hymn in the Diamond Sūtra, 富嫌千口少貧恨一身多 The rich complain the fortune for a thousand is too little. The poor grumble even his own body is too much. |
