昔在己酉詔使之遊漢江也。一時名於詩者。皆以製述官隨之。乘船在後。相與評論古今詩。滿舡喧然。語及蘇齋。一口言曰大家手也。安敢輕議。座有二三人獨曰。短律雖佳。長律則麤厲。不足取。車典籍。雲輅。攘臂大呼曰。小家之作。雖一篇一句可詠。綴拾纖碎。索無氣力。至如蘇齋之作。有萬鈞之勢。安敢與之爭衡也。無異草間蟋蟀遇洪鐘而止。因擧遊金剛山長律一首而誦之。其屯雲古檜陰陰洞。落日危橋淺淺灣之句。三復詠歎。以余觀之。上句渾厚。下句雅亮。輕重似不均稱矣。
Korean Translation
지난 기유년(1609, 광해군1) 조사(詔使)가 한강에서 유람할 때, 당시 시로 유명한 이들이 모두 제술관으로 따라갔다. 배를 타고 뒤에 있으면서 서로 고금의 시를 평론하는데 온 배안이 시끌벅적하였다. 논의가 소재에 이르자 한결같이 말하기를,

“대가의 솜씨이니 어찌 감히 가볍게 의론할 수 있겠느냐.” 하였는데, 자리에 있던 두세 사람만은 유독 말하기를, “단율은 비록 아름다우나 장률은 거칠어서 취할 만하지 못합니다.” 하였다. 전적 차운로(車雲輅)가 팔뚝을 걷으며 크게 외치기를, “소가(小家)의 작품이 비록 일편 한 구절은 읊조릴 만해도 자잘한 것들을 주워 모았기 때문에 전혀 기력이 없소. 소재의 작품 같은 것은 만균(萬鈞)의 기세가 있으니 어찌 감히 그와 더불어 우열을 다투겠소. 풀밭의 귀뚜라미가 큰 종소리를 만나면 울음이 그치는 것과 다를 바 없소.” 하였다. 인하여〈유금강산(遊金剛山)〉장률 한 수를 들어 읊었는데, 그중,

어두운 골짝 늙은 느티나무에 구름이 머물고 / 屯雲古檜陰陰洞 얕은 물굽이 높다란 다리에 해가 기우네 / 落日危橋淺淺灣

라는 구절에서는 거듭 영탄(詠嘆)하였다. 내가 보기에 윗구는 혼후(渾厚)하고, 아랫구는 아량(雅亮)하여 경중이 고르게 맞지 않는 듯하다.

English Translation
In the kiyu year (1609), when the imperial envoy cruised the Han River, all who were famous for poetry at the time accompanied him as Composers of Documents (chesulgwan). After embarking the ship, they discussed together poems from the past and present, and the whole ship was clamorous. When it got to the discussion on No Susin, they said in one voice, “He had skills of a master poet (taega). How can we dare to speak lightly of him?” Only two or three people there remarked, “Although No’s short regulated verses are good, his long regulated verses are coarse and count for little.” Librarian (chŏnjŏk) Ch’a Ullo bared his arms and cried out in a loud voice, “Although minor poets’ every poem and every phrase can be chanted, they are patched-together tiny fragments and certainly lack vigor (kiryŏk). As for No’s works, they have the might of ten thousand catties. How is it possible to compare the two? It is no different from a cricket in the field that stops chirping when it meets a large bell.” Then he chose one long regulated verse by No on the journey through the Diamond Mountains and recited it. Ch’a repeatedly praised a phrase in the poem, 屯雲古檜陰陰洞落日危橋淺淺灣 Clouds gather over the old cypress by the shaded grotto.The sun sets over the high bridge above the shallow bay. In my opinion, the first line is simple and direct (honhu) and the second line elegant and luminous (aryang). Their weights appear to be at odds.
