| 荷谷許典翰。篈。以能詩大有名。不幸而夭。其詩播在人口者。絶少。余不得見其累篇。近鄭學士畸窩。弘溟。謂余曰。曾聞張內翰。維。論東方人詩曰。爾來文人才子中。荷谷之詩爲最云。余以爲張內翰必有所見。求得荷谷遺稿一卷。常手把貪翫。眞絶代詩才也。調格之高。同景樊堂。而無虛誕之病。厥弟筠雖贍裕不竭。格律甚卑。不可同日道也。 |

| 전한(典翰) 하곡(荷谷) 허봉(許篈)은 시를 잘 지어 크게 이름을 떨쳤는데, 불행히도 요절하여 그의 시가 사람의 입에 전파되어 있는 것은 매우 적다. 나도 그의 시를 여러 편은 보지 못하였는데, 근래에 학사 기와(畸窩) 정홍명(鄭弘溟)이 나에게 말하기를,
“일찍이 들으니 내한(內翰) 장유(張維)가 우리나라 사람의 시를 논하기를 ‘근래의 문인재자 중에 하곡의 시가 으뜸이다’ 하였습니다.” 하였다. 나는 장 내한(張內翰)이야말로 틀림없이 본 것이 있었으리라 여기고, 《하곡유고(荷谷遺稿)》 한 권을 구하여 얻고서 늘 손에 들고 탐독하였는데 진실로 절세의 시재(詩才)였다. 격조가 높기는 경번당(景樊堂)과 같았지만 허탄한 병통은 없었다. 그 아우 허균은 재주가 넉넉하여 다함이 없지만 격률(格律)은 몹시 비루하니 같이 말할 수 없다. |

| Third Counselor (chŏnhan) Hŏ Pong was greatly renowned for his poetry but unfortunately died young. Very few of his poems are on people’s lips, and I had not been able to see a compilation of his works. Recently, Academician (haksa) Chŏng Hongmyŏng 鄭弘溟 (1582–1650; sobriquet Kiam [Lopsided Studio]) said to me, “I once heard Academician (naehan) Chang Yu 張維 (1587–1638) discuss Korean poets, and he said, ‘Among the literary talents of recent times, Hŏ Pong wrote best poetry.’” Thinking that Chang must have an opinion, I sought out a copy of the Hagok yugo 荷谷遺稿 (Posthumous Works of Hagok) and often held it in hand and read it with great pleasure. Truly, he was a peerless poetic talent. His style (chogyŏk) was as lofty (ko) as Hŏ Ch’ohŭi’s but without the problem of empty boastfulness. Although his younger brother Hŏ Kyun has ample talent that has not been exhausted, his style and standard (kyŏngnyul) are so inferior (pi) that the two cannot be discussed together. |
