| 鄭處士天遊之升。以詩鳴於世。其叔父古玉碏嘗稱其才調絶等曰。鳥啼春有意。花落雨無情者。非仙語乎。以余所見。上句近兒童所誦聯句。古玉之擧是爲言。未可曉也。嘗聞林白湖誦天遊一絶句曰。草入王孫恨。花添杜宇愁。汀洲人不見。風動木蘭舟。爲近世絶唱。自以爲不可及。是則果然矣。天遊本洛陽人。年少時不得於世。卜地龍潭萬疊山中。結草堂。顏以叢桂。遂終焉。 |

| 처사인 천유(天遊) 정지승(鄭之升)은 시로 세상에 알려졌다. 그의 숙부인 고옥(古玉) 정작(鄭碏)이 일찍이 그의 재주가 출중하다고 칭찬하며 말하기를,
새가 우니 봄은 뜻이 있고 / 鳥啼春有意 꽃이 지니 비가 무정하네 / 花落雨無情 라고 한 것은 실로 선어(仙語)가 아니냐고 하였다. 나의 소견으로는 상구(上句)는 아동들이 암송하는 연구(聯句)에 가까운데, 고옥이 이를 들어 말한 것은 이해할 수 없다. 일찍이 들으니, 임백호(林白湖)가 천유의 한 절구를 낭송하여 이르기를, 풀에는 왕손의 한 스며들고 / 草入王孫恨 꽃은 두견새 시름 더 하네 / 花添杜宇愁 정주에 사람은 보이지 않고 / 汀洲人不見 바람에 목란주만 흔들리네 / 風動木蘭舟 라고 한 것은 근세의 절창이며 그 자신도 이에 미칠 수 없다고 하였다. 이 말은 과연 그렇다. 천유는 본래 서울 사람으로, 젊을 때 세상에서 뜻을 얻지 못하고 용담(龍潭 전북 진안군 소재)의 첩첩 산 속에 터를 잡아 초당(草堂)을 짓고 총계(叢桂)라고 편액하고 살다가 세상을 마쳤다. |

| Recluse Chŏng Chisŭng (sobriquet Ch’ŏnyuja [Master Celestial Traveller]) became renowned for his poetry. In praise of his talent in quatrain composition, his uncle Chŏng Chak once said, 鳥啼春有意花落雨無情 Birds call in spring with affection.Flowers fall in rain without a heart.“Aren’t these words of an immortal?” In my opinion, the above lines resemble couplets for children. I cannot comprehend why Chŏng Chak made such a comment. I heard Im Che recite a quatrain by Chŏng Chisŭng, 草入王孫恨花添杜宇愁汀洲人不見風動木蘭舟 When plants sprout, you regret.When flowers bloom, cuckoos worry.On the islet, there is no one.The wind moves the magnolia boat. and remark that it was a poetic masterpiece (chŏlch’ang) that he could not attain. It truly is so. Chŏng Chisŭng was originally a native to Hanyang. As a youth, he was not recognized by the world, so he settled in Yongdam, deep in the mountain. He built a thatched hut and named it Chonggye (Cassia Bush) and remained there until his death. |
