庚辰北征。申文忠公叔舟爲上將。一日。會僚佐宴飮。文忠令軍中曰。稠人之中。能作詩寫今日意者。余擇爲上客。有別侍衛朴撝謙者卽應聲曰。十萬貔貅擁戍樓。夜深邊月冷狐裘。一聲長笛來何處。吹盡征夫萬里愁。文忠喜之。擢爲上客。朴因此得詩名。

Korean Translation
경진년(1460, 세조6)에 북방을 정벌할 때에 문충공(文忠公) 신숙주(申叔舟)가 상장(上將)이 되었다. 하루는 막료들을 모아 놓고 잔치를 베풀었다. 문충공이 군중(軍中)에 명령하기를 “많은 사람 중에 시를 지어 오늘의 뜻을 묘사하는 자가 있으면 내가 그를 뽑아 상객(上客)으로 삼겠노라.” 하였다. 별시위(別侍衛) 박휘겸(朴撝謙)이란 사람이 즉석에서 읊기를, 십만의 용맹한 군사 수루를 에워쌌는데 / 十萬貔貅擁戍樓 밤 깊은 변방 달빛 여우 갖옷에 싸늘하네 / 夜深邊月冷狐裘 한 줄기 긴 피리 소리 어디서 들려오는가 / 一聲長笛來何處 정부의 만리 시름을 불어서 다 없애주네 / 吹盡征夫萬里愁 하니, 문충공이 기뻐하여 그를 뽑아 상객으로 삼았다. 박휘겸이 이로 인해 시명(詩名)을 얻게 되었다.

English Translation

On the northern expedition in the kyŏngjin year (1460), Sin Sukchu (sobriquet Munch’unggong [Master Literary Devotion]) served as a general. One day, during a banquet with his assistant officials, Sin issued an order to his entire army, saying, “Among all of you, whoever can write a poem that captures the significance of todaywill be selected as my guest of honor.” Immediately, Pak Hwigyŏm 朴撝謙 (15th century), a Special Attending Guardsman (pyŏlsiwi), responded with the following verse, 十萬貔貅擁戍樓夜深邊月冷狐裘一聲長笛來何處吹盡征夫萬里愁 A hundred thousand fearless soldiers Surround the enemy’s fortress.Late at night, the moonlit frontier feels cold even with a fox fur coat.The sound of a long bamboo pipe,from where does it come? It blows away the campaigning soldiers’ten-thousand-li worries. Delighted, Sin chose Pak to be his guest of honor, and because of this event, Pak gained poetic fame.
